The Bobtown community is holding a rededication ceremony this weekend for the World War II honor roll in remembrance of local veterans.

If not for the community pulling together, the war memorial would have continued to fall apart and disappear, Bobtown resident Brenda Stone said.

The memorial was erected in the 1940s by the community for veterans who served between 1941 and 1945, but the monument has slowly deteriorated over the past couple of decades, Stone said. The stone was breaking apart in the corners and the names of remembrance were starting to fade away.

“It wasn’t beautiful anymore,” Stone said.

She along with the community decided they couldn’t watch a local memorial landmark disappear. They started an initiative in the community this summer to raise money to restore the monument back to good condition.

“It has taken a lot of man hours to do this by a lot of people,” Stone said.

The restoration of the stone was done by Mardo Masonry of Waynesburg. They rehabilitated the old stone and brought the plaque showcasing the 348 veterans names back to life with new stone work as a frame.

The two eagles that had been whitewashed by years of weather were restored and repainted by Robert Perry of Bobtown.

The project is finally coming to an end this week and the community is holding a rededication ceremony for the war memorial at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Members of the Greensboro Veterans of Foreign Wars will be speaking with other pomp and circumstance to follow. Live music will be provided by the Mapletown High School marching band and Bobby and Chris Menear of Mapletown. Joe Ziglar of Bobtown will be doing a fly-over in his yellow plane for the service as well.

Local veterans and others are invited to come and participate in the rededication ceremony.

“I hope people come out and show the support these men and women deserve,” Stone said.
