West Greene students learn about fire safety
Elementary students at West Greene learned about fire safety from members of the Center Township Fire Department on Friday morning.
Chief Charlie Jones spoke to kindergarten through sixth-grade students about the importance of families having an escape plan and what they can do to help firefighters.
“We do this so hopefully the kids will grow up with fire safety,” Jones said.
Fire department members began with a video about escape plans and explained that every family should have one for their home.
Jones told the students, “You are what we are most worried about.”
He told them about having smoke detectors in numerous rooms of a home and the importance of checking them once a month.
The members also showed the students how a firefighter looks wearing all of his equipment so the students know who to look for in a time of need.
“We do this to show the kids that they don’t have to be afraid,” Jones said. “The equipment can change how they think a firefighter should look and sometimes that scares kids. This will show them that they are just our local friendly firefighters.”
Thirty-three students received awards from the fire department for their coloring, essay and poster submissions to fire department contests.
Students got to meet the department’s spokesman, Sparky the dalmatian, and saw several fire trucks.
