City man accused of spraying disinfectant in deputy’s eyes
A Washington man has been charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly sprayed disinfectant in the eyes of a Washington County deputy sheriff and attempted to flee from Washington Hospital in September.
Edward Fowler, 26, of 984 Jefferson Ave., was arraigned Tuesday before District Judge Robert Redlinger on charges of aggravated and simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and escape.
Fowler was being guarded by Deputy Chad Beattie at Washington Hospital on Sept. 25, when he sprayed disinfectant in Beattie’s eyes and ran from the room, court documents indicate. Beattie deployed a Taser on Fowler twice to subdue him. During the incident, Beattie fractured his right hand and had burning and blurriness in his eyes, according to court documents.
In June, Angela Marie Lucci, 24, of Perry Como Street, Canonsburg, escaped while being guarded at the hospital. Lucci was under observation at the hospital for an injury when she asked to use the restroom and slipped out of leg shackles. She is accused of stealing a car from the 400 block of Wilson Avenue and using it to drive to the Steubenville, Ohio, area, where Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies took her into custody.
The deputy who was guarding her served a suspension and was later reinstated.
Court documents did not specify why Fowler was at the hospital. He was placed in the county jail on $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 5.
