A sestercentennial committee has been formed in preparing for the 250th birthday of the founding of Carmichaels.

The birthday isn’t until 2017, but as Marianne Gideon, chair of the committee, said, “you have to plan ahead.”

A group has been meeting every month since February. Officers are Bill Groves, chair; Marianne Gideon, co-chair; Joyce Fortney, secretary; and Lena Davis, treasurer.

The 250th celebration has been scheduled from June 29, 2017, to July 2, 2017.

Various committees have been formed, and plans are being formulated. Organizers recently announced they need the community’s help.

In order to offset costs for the event, they are selling shares of stock at $5 each. Shares are available at various events throughout the community and also from any officer or committee member.

“It will be something the people could keep or frame or pass on as a gift,” Gideon said.

Local businesses in Carmichaels and outlying towns have been sent a letter asking if they would like to have a booth during the event.

Any clubs or business that did not receive a letter and would like to participate or for people interested in buying a share or joining a committee, call one of the following: Bill Groves at 724-998-5555; Marianne Gideon at 724-998-6178; Joyce Fortney at 724-366-9411; or Lena Davis at 724-998-8381.

A Facebook page for the event is coming soon.
