State police at the Washington barracks said Tuesday they continue to get complaints from residents who were called by people claiming to be employees of the federal Internal Revenue Service, notifying them they owe money.

If the callers object, they are threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license.

Some residents report callers tell them they are owed a refund in an attempt to gain personal information.

IRS representatives will not call to demand immediate payment or call without first sending a written notice. They also will not demand payment using a prepaid debit card or ask for your credit or debit card numbers over the phone. IRS representatives also will not contact local police or law enforcement.

Police advise if you do owe taxes or get a call to call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. If you know you do not owe taxes or have no reason to believe you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484 or www.tigta.gov.
