READING (AP) – A police dog is reported in critical but stable condition after being injured in a fall while looking for possible intruders at an eastern Pennsylvania school.

Reading police said K-9 officer Cody accompanied officers to Southwest Middle School at about 8:15 p.m. Friday after a side door was found unlocked.

Police said the 3-year-old Belgian Malinois was on a catwalk with his handler when he fell 15 to 20 feet. No one was found inside the school.

Cody was flown to the University of Pennsylvania veterinary hospital because of concerns that he might have internal bleeding.

Reading police said on their Facebook page on Saturday that Cody had improved and doctors were optimistic, but he remained in intensive care and “he’s still not out of the woods yet.”
