House Democrats get $1.9M from Treasury amid budget standoff

HARRISBURG (AP) – The House Democratic caucus is getting nearly $1.9 million from the state Treasury Department to pay its employees after its money ran out because of Pennsylvania’s budget impasse.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday that Treasury determined there’s “sufficient legal justification” to pay legislative branch workers even though the state’s been without a budget since July 1.
Executive and judicial branch employees are also being paid as usual.
A House Democratic spokesman said the money will be repaid once a budget is enacted. The other caucuses are also facing the potential of exhausting their reserves and have floated the possibility of obtaining loans.
Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf is negotiating with Republican majorities in the House and Senate in an effort to resolve the deadlock.
