A small fire erupted Saturday morning on Route 50 in Hickory after a vehicle driven by Jacob Dunlap, 23, of West Middletown, struck a utility pole, leaving downed wires.
The accident happened around 3 a.m. near a residence located at 60 Main St., according to Mt. Pleasant Police Chief Lou McQuillen. But the fire didn’t start until 5 a.m. when the wires started sparking and caught a small structure on fire. No one was injured in the fire.
Route 50 was closed in both directions until 8:30 a.m., McQuillen said. About 300 residents lost electricity as West Penn Power crews took down connecting lines to restore power. Nearly 70 residents were still without power as of 2:30 p.m., and power was expected to be restored to all customers by 5 p.m., according to a company spokesman.
Dunlap was taken to a hospital with police for a blood draw but was not arrested and was released, McQuillen said. It was not clear if he sustained any injuries.
