PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A Philadelphia police officer wounded in the line of duty seven years ago will be among those greeting Pope Francis when he arrives in the City of Brotherly Love later this month.

Officials with the archdiocese of Philadelphia and the World Meeting of Families say Officer Richard Bowes, his wife and three children have been chosen to greet the pope when he arrives in the city on Sept. 26.

The surprise announcement was made during Sunday Mass at St. Christopher’s Church in the Somerton neighborhood of northeast Philadelphia, where Bowes and his family are parishioners.

Bowes was shot while responding to a September 2008 shooting in north Philadelphia that claimed the life of another officer, Patrick McDonald. After being wounded, he shot and killed the suspect, 27-year-old Daniel Giddings.
