HARRISBURG – A new search warrant was executed Thursday at the headquarters office of Attorney General Kathleen Kane, who was charged more than a month ago with leaking secret investigative information to a newspaper reporter and then lying about it.

Montgomery County detectives declined to comment as they waited to be escorted into her Harrisburg offices across the street from the Capitol.

Kane’s spokesman, Chuck Ardo, confirmed the detectives served a search warrant on her office. The office was cooperating, Ardo said, but he said he didn’t know what information the detectives were seeking or the nature of the investigation.

“We have no way of knowing what the investigation involves or whether it involves the attorney general herself or not,” Ardo said.

Kane, the first Democrat and first woman elected attorney general of Pennsylvania, was charged Aug. 6 with perjury, obstruction and other offenses related to what they say was the leak of confidential information from a 2009 grand jury investigation.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman said her office was continuing to investigate allegations Kane fired a staff attorney whose testimony helped build the case against her.

Kane, who was in Scranton on Thursday, denied breaking any laws and said she is a victim of payback for taking on a corrupt, old-boy law enforcement network and for exposing state employees for exchanging pornographic emails.

An agency that investigates misconduct by state lawyers is trying to get Kane’s law license suspended to prevent her from, they say, damaging the administration of justice.

Kane vowed to run for her second term in 2016.
