Washington County Judge John DiSalle on Friday approved the appointment of Robert V. Caldwell III as police officer for McGuffey School District.

At the request of school district solicitor William C. Andrews, Caldwell, a resident of the Washington area, will have the authority to issue summary citations or to detain individuals until other local law enforcement agencies are notified.

Caldwell’s authority extends to McGuffey school buildings, buses and grounds. He is the former East Washington Borough chief of police.

The McGuffey School Board hired Caldwell on Thursday at a salary of $36,000 for the current school year, pending confirmation of appropriate certifications, according to Scott Burchill, business administrator. He replaces Jeffrey Seeley, a school district employee since February 2013, who resigned at the end of last school year.
