DAISYTOWN – A Monongahela contractor will reclaim an abandoned mine site in exchange for the estimated 15,000 tons of coal that are on the property in West Pike Run Township, the state department of Environmental Protection said.

Rostosky Coal LLC will remove $25,000 worth of coal from the former J&L Steel mine near Walkertown, DEP spokesman John Poister said Wednesday. It was last mined in 1915.

“The contract requires total reclamation and revegetation of the project area,” Poister said.

The project involves stabilizing the old mine and removing hazards from the 3-acre site off Pike Run Drive, said state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California.

Blasting and reprocessing the coal is prohibited under the terms of the contract, Daley said.

The site has 1.6 acres of abandoned deep mine features and 1.4 acres of high walls and other dangerous cuts in the land, Poister said.
