PHILADELPHIA (AP) – While the papal visit closed bridges and roads to vehicles, one carrying a kidney transplant recipient managed to get to a Philadelphia hospital on Saturday – with a little help from state police.
The Berlin woman got a call Saturday that a kidney was available at Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, across the Delaware River. But with bridges, highways and many downtown roads closed because of Pope Francis’ visit, she needed help getting there.
New Jersey and Pennsylvania state police escorted a Jefferson ambulance carrying the woman from her home, over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and to the hospital.
New Jersey State Police spokesman Capt. Stephen Jones said it was “cool being a part of it.”
A Jefferson spokeswoman said the patient is awaiting transplant surgery.
