Canon-McMillan notifies parents after three students approached by man in vehicle
Canonsburg police said there was no luring attempt Monday after a misunderstanding when man was trying to pick up his granddaughter at the Canon-McMillan Middle School.
Three middle school students were approached by an older man in a car in what was originally reported as a possible luring attempt after the man said “your ride is here” to the group.
“This was a man sent by his daughter-in-law to pick up a family member and it was a case of first-look mistaken identity,” said police Chief Alex Coghill.
The unidentified man in his 50s circled back around near the children in an attempt to find his granddaughter, police said.
A letter to district parents issued Tuesday notified them of the situation after the track coach took down a license plate number of the silver Hyuandai Elantra the man was driving. Police were able to find the man’s identity and speak with him.
The letter from the middle school principal urged parents to talk with children about when to accept a ride and how to stay safe.
