Police: Charleroi man fires weapon into home
CHARLEROI – A Charleroi man is accused firing a shot into a borough home after a woman who lives there refused early Monday to allow him enter, court records show.
Charleroi Regional police accuse Val W. Smith, 18, of 410 S. Shady Ave. of telling the woman he “would be back with his tool” after she refused to let him in. He allegedly returned to the residence about 12:20 a.m. and fired a shot from a stolen semiautomatic handgun through a bedroom window without injuring the four occupants, two of whom were juveniles.
Smith later went to the Cougar Mini Mart at 750 Lincoln Ave., North Charleroi, and surrendered the gun owned by his stepfather to a store clerk and turned himself into police, according to the affidavit supporting the criminal charges in the case.
Smith told police two men “jumped him” in the 100 block of Lookout Avenue before he returned there with the gun and fired it into the residence of Cody Roberts and Christina Wichert at 105 1/2 Lookout. He also said he didn’t believe the gunshot struck the house, court records indicate.
Police said the bullet traveled across the room and lodged in a wall.
Smith is charged with illegally discharging a weapon, theft, receiving stolen property and reckless endangerment.
He is in Washington County jail on $100,000 bond set by District Judge Larry Hopkins.
