Police: Girlfriend runs over man twice
A Canton Township woman is accused of running over a Chartiers Township man twice with a vehicle early Thursday at a Canton convenience store after he allegedly assaulted her.
Tracy Garrett, 42, of 11 Rawson Drive, is charged with aggravated and simple assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless endangerment and careless driving for allegedly twice hitting James Megyesy with the Cadillac Seville she was driving in the parking lot of the Circle K convenience store at 860 Henderson Ave. (Route 18). Megyesy, 46, of 806 Governors Circle, is charged with simple assault and harassment for allegedly hitting Garrett in the head and face while the two were in the car.
State police were called about 12:30 a.m. to the store for a crash involving a pedestrian. Megyesy, who was being treated, told troopers his girlfriend ran over him and left the scene. He had a cut to his left eye and was complaining of back and neck pain. He also had a strong odor of alcohol about him, police said.
The clerk told police the two had been in the store before getting into a physical altercation inside the car. Megyesy got out of the car, and Garrett threw his cellphone out of the car, the clerk told police.
Garrett then reportedly drove between the pumps and back toward Megyesy. The clerk told police Megyesy opened the passenger door and Garrett put the car in reverse, knocking him to the ground. Megyesy then got up and started running to the vehicle, and Garrett reportedly drove around the pumps and hit Megyesy a second time, again knocking him to the ground, police said. When a trooper asked the clerk if Garrett could have left without hitting Megyesy a second time, the clerk told police that she intentionally ran over him.
Police said they found Garrett at Megyesy’s home, standing by the car. Police said she had swelling and a red mark on her face.
She told police the two had been drinking at a club on Jefferson Avenue. She said they were returning to his house when they stopped at the store. Garrett told police she was talking with the clerk when Megyesy came in and told her to leave. She said when they got into the car, Megyesy accused her of wanting to perform a sex act on the clerk. Garrett told police he hit her and she told him to get out of the car.
Police said Garrett, who also smelled of alcohol, had a blood-alcohol level about the legal limit.
Garrett was charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, simple assault, driving under the influence and careless driving. She was arraigned before District Judge Gary Havelka and placed in Washington County jail on $10,000 bond. Megyesy was taken to Washington Hospital for treatment and then arraigned before District Judge Robert Redlinger on charges of simple assault and harassment. He was placed in jail on $5,000 bond.
Both are to appear Wednesday for preliminary hearings before District Judge David Mark.
