SOUTH STRABANE – Supervisors in South Strabane Township approved Tuesday an additional $133,690 in work change orders to road work on Cameron Road. Supervisors scoffed at Widemer Engineering consultant Richard Rush’s suggestion the now $449,235 project would be completed by next Friday.

There’s no clear timetable when the road can reopen after additional work was announced to stabilize fill and fix paving.

“What was dug out is no good. Dead animal carcasses, logs, a ton of miscellaneous debris buried. We would have ended halfway into Beau Street with our ongoing excavation plans. We re-evaluated, dug a few holes and we had to go 10 feet deeper than originally planned. All the fill we took from there and the site itself, it had no structural value whatsoever. It was all basically slop,” Rush said.

The board voted 4-1 to approve the extra costs, with Ed Mazur voting against the measure. The additions will be paid with Act 13 gas monies, according to manager John Stickle.

The board also approved doubling the bond for Triangle Construction to move 800 loads of fill to Tower Golf on Berry Road from $5,000 to $10,000. Chairman Jack Keisling voted no, saying he doesn’t believe the road bond was large enough, despite advice from Stickle the company didn’t have to bond out at all, and the move was a courtesy.

Most of the discussion was surrounding exclusive use of the township ball fields, with an existing contract being honored with Trinity softball teams for sole usage of the fields. Washington and Trinity baseball teams are looking to use the fields. Action on any amended contract was tabled.

In other business, representatives from Range Resources and Rice Energy submitted letters to the board for consideration ahead of an April 19 public hearing on curative amendments to gas drilling ordinances. A voting meeting will be held April 28.

The board also unanimously approved the hiring of two part-time police officers, Keith Zenkovich and Jaimie Quintero.
