Washington officials formed a partnership with West Penn Power, resulting in replacement and upgrades to about 1,300 street lights throughout the city.

The old mercury vapor and high-pressure sodium lights will be replaced with high-efficiency LED lights, which produce more light and are less expensive to operate.

“This is a very ambitious project that will take time to design and complete, but it is a long-overdue upgrade to a vital component of our infrastructure. Making our neighborhoods brighter at night will make them safer,” said Mayor Scott Putnam in a press release. “The beauty of this project is that we can fund it through savings realized by converting to LED lights and getting a lower-cost per kilowatt hours. We hope to cut our monthly costs by half after the project is funded.”
