State police are working to identify a body found floating in Chartiers Creek in Canton Township Monday afternoon.

State police Cpl. Mark Bardzil said police believe the deceased appears to be a middle-aged black man.

“I don’t want to do the coroner’s job, but there does not appear to be any trauma,” Bardzil said.

Two people who’d been planning to go fishing in the creek near Hewitt and Henderson avenues found the body about 5 p.m. The creek runs behind Curtis Pharmacy, 869 Henderson Ave., Washington.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police, members of the Washington County Coroner’s Office and volunteer firefighters were in the parking lot near where the body was found for more than two hours, removing the body from the creek and beginning their investigation. Troopers also searched a nearby clearing off Hewitt.

The cause of death is pending an autopsy, Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said. Bardzil said it doesn’t appear foul play was involved.

Anyone with information about a missing person should call state police at 724-223-5200.
