Waynesburg U. students prepare for summer service
WAYNESBURG – More than two-dozen Waynesburg University students are preparing to travel to spend portions of their summer break at two service sites.
The projects include partnerships with Camp Boggy Creek in Florida and the Loyola Jesuit House in New Jersey.
University faculty and staff will lead two Faith, Learning and Service Immersion Trips, covering a variety of academic and professional interests.
The Waynesburg University Lamplighters Touring Choir will serve in Morristown, N.J., from Monday, May 2, through Sunday, May 8, and use their singing talents to benefit others. During the weeklong trip, the 16 students will perform seven concerts at various Christian schools, senior care centers and retreat centers.
In addition to singing, the students will also be completing renovations as well as painting and cleaning at the Loyola Jesuit House in Morristown. Melanie Catana, director of choral music at Waynesburg University, James Bush, professor of mathematics, and Nelson Fox, the choir’s pianist, will serve as trip leaders.
Meanwhile, 10 students will travel to Eustis, Fla., from June 8, through June 14, to serve Camp Boggy Creek, a camp that serves children aged 7 to 16 who have been diagnosed with chronic or life-threatening conditions.
The participating students and faculty will serve as cabin counselors for the weeklong service trip. In this capacity, they will take care of the daily needs of the 10 campers in their perspective cabins. They also will have the opportunity to lead by example and provide an exciting and empowering experience for the campers.
The trip will be co-led by Jennifer Shiring, nurse director of student health services, and Amy Wilson, student health care nurse.
