Two friends named grand champions of Greene County Fair lamb, steer shows
WAYNESBURG – Two friends took home grand championships in the 4-H Market Lamb and Market Steer shows this week at the Greene County Fair.
Tristan Cole, 14, of Wayne Township, won the lamb competition, with a 128-pound, middleweight class lamb at the market lamb show Wednesday night. His friend, Holden Headlee, 16, of Morgan Township, won the market steer show Tuesday night with a 1,321-pound, middleweight class steer.
“It’s exciting,” Cole said. “I’m glad we both won. I’ve won competitions before, but never in a lamb club where there’s so many other animals.”
Cole has been competing in 4-H for six years and Headlee has been competing for seven.
“I wanted to win,” Headlee said. “It was just a lot of time and hard work that went into it.”
During the steer and lamb shows, animals were split into three weight divisions with a champion and a reserve champion selected in each division. From the winners in each division, the overall grand champion and reserve grand champion were chosen.
Cole’s and Headlee’s animals competed among 69 lambs and 36 steers. The reserve grand champion for the lamb show was Anthony Brookover, with a 139-pound, heavyweight class lamb. The reserve grand champion for the steer show was Benjamin Archer for his 1,321-pound, middleweight class steer.
Cole also was selected as the reserve champion in the lightweight division of the steer show and the division champion was Alexus Grecoe. Headlee was the champion for the middleweight division, with Archer as the reserve.
Cole’s younger sister, Hannah Cole, won the champion heavyweight division of the steer show with Emmitt Whipkey as the reserve division champion.
In the lightweight lamb division, Allie Midla took home the champion and Anna Whyte was named the reserve champion. Tristan Cole won the lamb middleweight champion and Daniel Brookover was named the reserve champion in the same division.
The heavyweight lamb winners were Anthony Brookover, as champion, and RJ Wolen, as reserve champion.
The annual market steer and market lamb sale was held Thursday night, although prices of the two grand champions were not available before press time.
