CARMICHAELS – Carmichaels Area Elementary Center will be ready for school to start Aug. 29 as long as the building passes its occupancy inspection Monday.

“Every day, I see improvements,” elementary Principal Fred Morecraft said during the school board meeting Thursday. “I truly believe we’ll be ready to go.”

The first day of school will be the first time since April that all of the elementary students are in the same building, due to the $6 million renovations that were completed over the spring and summer. During construction, many of the students’ classes were moved to trailers, or “learning cottages,” set up on the district property.

The project included new lighting, ceilings and flooring, improvements to security in the foyer, a new heating and ventilation system, remodeled bathrooms and updated technology throughout.

“It looks beautiful,” Morecraft said. “I think the kids are going to be excited because it’s noticeably brighter and cleaner.”

David Franks, district maintenance supervisor, said he expects to pass the occupancy inspection and Mark Batis, district technology coordinator, is working on cost estimates for WiFi and cellphone service throughout the building.
