AMBRIDGE (AP) – Authorities in Western Pennsylvania have released the names of a man and woman fatally struck by an Amtrak passenger train.

Ambridge police believe 49-year-old Scott Meckling and 48-year-old Kollene McCoy-Graham misjudged the speed of the train as they ran across the tracks about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police chief James Mann says the couple may have wanted to swim in the nearby Ohio River. They were not struck at a marked railroad crossing and police say the engineer did nothing wrong and couldn’t stop the train, which was moving 72 to 75 mph.

The train was heading from Washington, D.C., to Chicago carrying 215 passengers.

Authorities say the couple had been staying with Meckling’s brother after McCoy-Graham moved to the area a couple of weeks ago to look for work.
