An early-morning fire Saturday caused heavy damage to a South Franklin Township home.

Firefighters were called to the residence at 3910 Park Ave. about 12:30 a.m. and found the second-floor on fire, South Franklin fire Chief Fred Hutson said.

The fire caused heavy damage to the second floor, while the rest of the residence sustained smoke and water damage, Hutson said. No one was home at the time.

Crews were on scene until shortly after 3 a.m., Hutson said. South Franklin firefighters were assisted by departments from Morris Township, North Franklin and Claysville.

Hutson said they believe the fire started on the second floor, but he did not know how it started. The state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
