Water from Ten Mile Creek laps up against the new bridge being constructed on Route 19/21 in Morrisville.

WAYNESBURG – It was difficult getting into and out of Waynesburg Borough Sunday morning as heavy rain Saturday night caused Ten Mile Creek to flood.

Route 21 was closed in West Waynesburg to the west and to the east at the new bridge at the McDonald’s Restaurant in Morrisville. Traffic was being detoured onto Sugar Run Road and Porter Street, where Crawford Bridge remained opened.

Gregory Leathers, director of Emergency Management Agency of Greene County, said the bridge reopened to motorists just after 5 p.m.

Waynesburg-Franklin fire Chief Jeff Marshall said his department responded to flooding in multiple locations around Waynesburg.

Firefighters closed Route 21 in West Waynesburg and helped rescue people from a few mobile homes in that area, Marshall said.

Waynesburg University’s Wylie Stadium, along with other athletic fields at the school, were also reportedly damaged by flood waters.

State Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson, said crews from Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency will be in the county Monday to assess any damage.

Waynesburg, Rogersville and West Greene were the hardest-hit areas, she said, with other reports of flooding in Spraggs and Brave.

“Drive slowly,” Leathers advised motorists. “Realize that after a flood…there’s a lot of stuff. It’s not just mud and water.”
