Route 906 in downtown Monessen to be rebuilt
MONESSEN – The state Department of Transportation will reconstruct four lanes of a deteriorating Route 906 in downtown Monessen over the next two years.
The $5.5 million project is expected to begin in March and involve the parallel, one-way roads also known as Donner and Schoonmaker avenues from Fourth Street to the 1100 block, Monessen Mayor Lou Mavrakis said Thursday.
“Look at the way it is now,” Mavrakis said. “It’s an obstacle course.”
The project will involve the relocations of water and natural gas lines, removal of the existing concrete road surface, creation of a new road base and a new asphalt surface, said PennDOT spokesman Jay Ofsanik.
“It’s a big job,” Ofsanik said.
Mavrakis said he expects Westmoreland County will extend the project to the Charleroi-Monessen Bridge.
He said the work crews will do one lane of travel at a time to keep traffic moving on Route 906.
In other business at their meeting Wednesday night, council members adopted a 2017 budget totaling $4 million that doesn’t include a real estate tax increase.
Council also increased the monthly sewer line fee from $7 to $12 to raise money to pay for repairs to the aging infrastructure.
