Location, location: Where was this Hatfield house?
This week’s Mystery Photo is an image from a glass plate made by the Weller Studio of Washington. The words “Hatfield house” were written on the negative, and, unfortunately, that’s all we know about it.
We are hoping our readers can help us determine where this house is (or was), when the picture was taken and why the image might have been preserved in the newspaper’s archives.
The young girl at right munching on an apple gives us a thought that the photo might have been taken in the 1930s. She and a utility pole that must be close to her are casting long shadows, which indicates that the street runs east to west, or vice versa, depending on whether the picture was taken in the morning or late afternoon.
Additionally, the brick street does not appear to have trolley tracks.
If you think you know where this house was or is, who the girl is, or the significance of the name Hatfield, email Park Burroughs, retired executive editor, at pburroughs@observer-reporter.com, or call and leave a message for him along with your telephone number at 724-222-2200, extension 2400. With a little assistance from our readers, we may be able to solve this puzzle and publish our findings next Monday.
