Coroner IDs two dead in suspected murder-suicide at Nemacolin home
NEMACOLIN – A married couple was found dead of an apparent murder-suicide inside their Nemacolin home Thursday morning after the husband called 911 from the residence about an unspecified emergency.
Cumberland police Chief Craig Miller said officers arrived at the house at 240 March Ave. shortly after the phone call and forced their way inside before finding the bodies.
The Greene County coroner’s office identified the deceased as Louis F. Drotos and Mary Sue Drotos, both 67. Investigators are treating the incident as a murder-suicide, according to the coroner’s office.
Miller said “we’re not actively seeking anyone at this time” and there is no danger to the community. Miller declined to say how the couple died or where the bodies were discovered.
Louis Drotos called Greene County emergency dispatchers at 8:14 a.m. and spoke briefly as he told them to send police officers to the residence, 911 Supervisor Jeff Rhodes said. Rhodes could not discuss the nature of the call, and Miller said he was working to get a copy of the recording to see if it could shed light on the incident.
The situation shocked the small village in Cumberland Township as numerous police cruisers and a state police mobile crime lab van surrounded the home. Miller said they had not been called to the residence for any domestic-related incidents.
“We had no record within the last seven or eight years,” he said.
Dave Rager, the couple’s former son-in-law, said there were no indications of problems and the family is “tore up” from the news.
“They’re really great people, and it’s just a shock to all of us,” he said.
A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said he knew the couple for most of his life and they were always friendly.
“Never had no problem,” he said. “Very friendly and good with the kids.”
Autopsies on both bodies are scheduled for today in Allegheny County.
State police are assisting Cumberland Township authorities in the investigation.
