Five Mon Valley boroughs intend to merge more services
ROSCOE – A string of Mon Valley boroughs nicknamed Five Town wants to begin sharing more services than a police department.
Officials from the boroughs of Dunlevy, Allenport, Stockdale, Roscoe and Elco will meet Wednesday to discuss issues that include sharing road crew members to lower costs on such efforts as paving projects, Roscoe Mayor Tom Wilkinson said.
“We have a lot of new council members down here, and they have indicated they want to work together,” Wilkinson said.
Four of the towns in 1991 became the first municipalities in Washington County to create a regional police force, known as the Roscoe, Elco, Stockdale and Allenport Regional Police Department.
The area at that time went from having one police officer to seven who staff one eight-hour shift a day.
“It’s worth sharing the services,” Wilkinson said. “Roscoe already shares a road worker with Dunlevy.”
He said the towns could save money when ordering street signs in the event 10 were needed in all of the boroughs rather than just one for a town along the five-mile stretch of Route 88 south of Charleroi.
He said the towns also would be better prepared as a team in the event they needed to approach the state Department of Transportation to discuss a problem.
There also is a need for one ordinance book for all five towns, Wilkinson said.
He said each borough will retain its own elected officials.
The boards want to hold a “meet and greet and exchange emails,” he said.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Stockdale fire hall at 320 Railroad Ave.
