J-M to hold used prom dress sale
Jefferson-Morgan Middle-High School girls will have a chance to make some money from old prom and formal dresses they’ve only worn once.
Middle and high school girls from Greene and Washington counties are invited to come to the Jefferson-Morgan High School gym March 4 and 5 when it’s turned into a used dress shop for the school’s first formal wear event.
“We talked about doing a prom fashion show, but there wasn’t a lot of interest in looking at new dresses,” said teacher Jodi Fulks, who organized the event. “The girls wanted to sell their old dresses.”
Maria Christy, a senior and treasurer of the student council, said the dresses will be discounted at 50 percent or more.
“We all have a bunch of dresses and we really only wore them once,” she said. “We are going to have tables of dresses set up at the gym and areas for girls to try stuff on.”
Fulks said the students selling dresses will get part of the proceeds and the rest will go to the student council’s charity fund to help out in the community to supply children’s winter coats, boots and school supplies.
“Some of the girls spend $600 to $800 on a new dress that they’ll wear once,” Fulks said. “So, this is a good way for them to make a little money and also to help out for a good cause.”
Students from other districts also can bring their dresses, Fulks said.
“We’ll probably have at least 100 dresses by the time of the event,” she said. “We will even have some from Washington County.”
The event, which is open to the public, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. March 4 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 5. Fulks said local businesses have donated door prizes like free dress alterations, spray tans and makeup for the weekend.
Fulks said the students will bring in the dresses the day of the event, but she’s been posting pictures of the dresses online at fulks.wikispaces.com for people to look at them ahead of time.
“If it’s successful, we’ll probably continue to hold it each year,” Fulks said.
