Repairs were made to a section of natural gas line in Hanover Township after a morning fire.

Residents in the area of the 200 block of Steubenville Pike in Hanover Township were asked to stay in their homes after a downed tree brought down electric wires onto a leaking gas line, which caught fire, according to a Hanover Township fire official.

The tree fell about 7:10 a.m., causing a small fire on the ground, said Ron Sicchitano, emergency operations officer for Washington County’s Department of Public Safety.

Crews from Columbia Gas and West Penn Power were called to 13 Ferguson St., along with Hanover Township firefighters.

A firefighter said electric was turned off in the area so crews could locate a gas line shut-off point. Ferguson Street, a dead-end off of Kings Creek Road, was termporarily closed to traffic, but all other area roadways remained open.

Brynnly Schwartz, a Columbia Gas spokeswoman, said the area was made safe and repairs were completed several hours later.
