A North Franklin Township woman and her son escaped injury when their Scenic Drive mobile home caught fire early Thursday.

Township fire Chief Dave Bane said the woman and her son, who is 12 or 13, were asleep on a couch when the fire started in a bedroom of their home about 1:25 a.m. Bane said smoke was visible from the mobile home, just off Park Avenue near Trinity Area Middle School, when he arrived but flames were soon showing.

The state police fire marshal determined the cause was electrical, starting in an electric box in one of the bedrooms. Assisting at the scene were firefighters from Canton, South Strabane and South Franklin townships. The American Red Cross is assisting the woman and her son with temporary housing and other needs. Their names were not available.

Bane said crews cleared the scene about 5:30 a.m.
