Pittsburgh sergeant charged again in Heinz Field arrest
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Charges have been refiled against a Pittsburgh police sergeant who was accused of punching a teen during an arrest this past fall at Heinz Field.
Allegheny County prosecutors say 47-year-old Sgt. Stephen Matakovich is now charged with simple assault, unsworn falsification to authorities, perjury and two counts of official oppression.
The charges were refiled Friday in Pittsburgh Municipal Court. Judge Robert Ravenstahl had dismissed simple assault and official oppression charges against Matakovich earlier this month.
Security camera footage from the stadium allegedly shows Matakovich pushing the 19-year-old man to the ground before hitting him several times.
Matakovich said during a Feb. 1 hearing that the teen was drunk and aggressive and made a fist.
Matakovich, who has been suspended, faces possible termination.
