Foundation streamlines scholarship applications
WAYNESBURG – The Community Foundation of Greene County streamlined its scholarship application process to make it easier for students looking for grants.
The nonprofit has about 13 scholarships for Greene County students, including some for homeschoolers, private school students and nontraditional students. Students used to have to apply for each individual scholarship, but now they can submit one application form and check off the scholarships they are seeking.
Bettie Stammerjohn, executive director of the Community Foundation, said the changes were made to “make it easier for the students.”
“I hope we’ll get more students applying,” she said.
Nine of the scholarships for graduating high school seniors have an application deadline of April 1. Two of them are new, the Jesse Benson Finnegan Scholarship for students graduating from Greene County Career and Technology Center, and the Russell A. Guthrie Memorial Scholarship for Jefferson-Morgan High School seniors who will attend either a technical school or a four-year college or university.
Stammerjohn said they have a total of 13 scholarships, with two more in the making. They distribute about $14,000 to about 25 to 30 students.
“I’ve been here nine years, and when I first started, we only had five scholarships,” Stammerjohn said.
She said many of them are in memory of family members who passed away.
“The people who gave the money want to do good and be able to pass it on in memory of their loved one,” she said.
Scholarships are typically awarded in May. Applications must be delivered to the Community Foundation’s office at 108 E. High St., Waynesburg, or mailed to P.O. Box 768, Waynesburg, PA 15370.
“I’ve spoken to parents and students at different events and if you don’t apply, you don’t have a chance at getting one,” Stammerjohn said.
