Charleston’s annual urban deer hunt sets record numbers
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Charleston’s annual urban deer hunt has set record numbers this season.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that the hunt saw its largest kill to date this season. According to City Manager David Molgaard, of the 105 deer killed between Sept. 2 and December, 85 were does and 23 were bucks.
Molgaard says the high doe kill would likely affect future deer populations in the city since does typically have two fawns each season.
One hundred deer were killed in both 2014 and 2013.
Molgaard says the number of hunting permits also increased from 150 in 2014 to 166 this season.
Just two of the 26 approved property tracts are city-owned. The rest were designated on private property within the city limits.
