Brother nabbed for role in jail escape
Clinton Hanlan, who is accused of helping his brother following his escape from Greene County jail last month, was returned to Pennsylvania and arraigned Tuesday afternoon on new charges.
Hanlan, 21, of Greene Township, was extradited from West Virginia to face charges of hindering apprehension and receiving stolen property.
State police said Hanlan aided Waylon Hanlan, 27, after the elder brother escaped from Greene County jail Dec. 27.
Police said Clinton hid an all-terrain vehicle that Waylon told police he stole from a man after assaulting him the night of the escape.
Clinton took the ATV and hid it in a field near his Turkey Knob Road home, police said.
Two days later, police stopped a car with Clinton, Waylon and their other brother, Shane Hanlan, when troopers spotted them driving in Dunkard Township.
Waylon and Shane ran from the car, although state police troopers arrested Waylon after a brief foot chase.
Police are continuing to search for Shane, who has been on the Greene County sheriff’s most wanted list for months after failing to show for a pre-sentencing hearing in May for his conviction on receiving stolen property.
Clinton Hanlan then took the car and drove south into West Virginia, where Monongalia County sheriff’s deputies arrested him.
District Judge Jesse Cramer arraigned Clinton Hanlan. He is being held at Greene County jail on $7,500 bond.
Meanwhile, the preliminary hearings for Waylon and his sister, Vanessa Hanlan, both scheduled for Wednesday morning, were delayed. Vanessa Hanlan, 23, is accused of aiding Waylon after the jail escape by giving him fresh clothes and car keys at her Dunkard Township house.
Both of them are being held at Washington County jail.
Authorities plan to combine the preliminary hearings for all three into one proceeding, although a date has not been set.
