U.S. marshals arrest Shane Hanlan in Dunkard Township
Shane Hanlan, who was on the run from authorities since May and allegedly helped his brother elude capture following his escape from Greene County jail last month, was arrested Thursday morning by U.S. Marshals Service.
The marshals went to Hanlan’s family home at 859 Bald Hill Church Road in Dunkard Township about 6 a.m. and saw Shane Hanlan sleeping on a couch inside, state police said.
The agents entered the home and told Hanlan he was being arrested, but he ran upstairs and broke an upstairs window while trying to get onto the roof. One agent tried to follow Hanlan out of the window, police said, but he cut his hands on the broken glass.
Hanlan jumped from the roof and continued to run from the marshals, but they were able to stop him. Police said in court documents the agents “had to use force to physically restrain him,” although they did not elaborate.
Hanlan, 29, was taken to Greene County jail, where he was awaiting arraignment Thursday night. He faces charges of escape and resisting arrest following Thursday’s incident.
The agent was treated at WHS-Greene hospital in Waynesburg for minor injuries and released, state Trooper Matt Jardine said.
Jardine said troopers and the marshals were working together through the Fugitive Task Force to locate Hanlan over the past week. Authorities were periodically going to the Bald Hill Church Road home to check if he was there.
Investigators received a tip Wednesday night Hanlan was seen riding in a car with his father, Hodge Hanlan, 70, heading toward Bobtown. Troopers went to the Bald Hill Church Road home and spoke to Hodge, who told them he had not seen Shane, nor did he know where he was.
However, when the marshals returned Thursday morning, they saw Hodge Hanlan sleeping on a couch next to where Shane was also sleeping.
Hodge Hanlan now faces a charge of hindering apprehension, although police were still searching for him as of Thursday afternoon.
Shane was on the Greene County sheriff’s most wanted list for months after failing to show for a pre-sentencing hearing in May for his conviction on receiving stolen property. Police said he, his brother Clinton, and their sister Vanessa, helped their other brother Waylon elude capture following his escape from Greene County jail Dec. 27. The other siblings are facing charges in connection with the case.
Waylon Hanlan was arrested Dec. 29 when state police spotted his car in Dunkard Township while he was riding with Clinton and Shane. Clinton took the car and was arrested by authorities in West Virginia. He was extradited back to Pennsylvania this week.
Shane eluded police for more than a week until Thursday morning’s raid.
