Washington house damaged in hit-and-run crash
The suspect in a hit-and-run crash that damaged a Washington house early Saturday turned himself into city police after he was identified from home surveillance video that was widely viewed on Facebook.
Police said the identity of the man wouldn’t be released until charges are filed against him in connection with the 2 a.m. crash at the 205 Locust Ave. home of Sam and Emily Papa.
The Papas heard the crash and placed a call to Washington County 911 while video showed the driver stumbled out of his pickup only to get back inside and drive off, Emily Papa said.
She said her husband was treated at Washington Hospital for minor injuries he suffered while he walked through the debris in the crash scene.
“I felt it upstairs,” she said. “Bricks have scattered. The whole porch and front yard are damaged.”
She said she hoped a craftsman can be found to replicate the intricate trim that was damaged on her large brick Victorian-style house.
Emily Papa posted the surveillance video on Facebook, and it received more than 1,000 shares by other users of the platform by Saturday afternoon.
The online attention the video received led a woman to reach out to Papa to state she knew where the damaged truck could be found. Police were then contacted about the tip.
Police said the truck involved in the crash was impounded as part of the investigation.
