Elderly couple robbed inside Cumberland Township home
CARMICHAELS – An elderly couple was robbed Monday night while inside their Cumberland Township home by a man wearing a handkerchief over his face.
Cumberland police Chief Craig Miller said the man knocked on the door of the couple’s Route 21 Estates home about 5:40 p.m. Monday and was let in by the woman before the robber walked directly to a table where the husband was sitting and grabbed an undisclosed amount of money.
The couple, both of whom are in their 80s, were “shaken up” by the incident but not injured, Miller said. Miller said the man spoke to the couple in a “mumbled” voice.
“He tried to speak to the individual there but they couldn’t make it out because of the handkerchief across his mouth,” Miller said.
Investigators said the man had been seen walking around the neighborhood knocking on doors before the robbery.
The robbery occurred just two days after Gabler’s Drug store, located two miles away in Carmichaels, was robbed of several prescriptions of Oxycodone by a white man claiming to have a gun.
Miller said they do not think the two incidents are related.
“We don’t have anything right now to link these together, so we’re not handling it as the same individual,” Miller said.
The man who robbed the elderly couple did not have a weapon, Miller said. In addition to having the blue handkerchief covering his face, he was seen wearing a jacket with reflective material and had a hood pulled over his head. He is described as being a white man standing about 5 feet 10 inches tall.
Any residents in the area with surveillance cameras or who saw a man matching that description in the neighborhood is asked to call Cumberland Township police at 724-966-8296. Miller also urged residents to be cautious when answering their door to people they don’t know.
