Greene Toys for Tots drive ‘best ever’
WAYNESBURG – The recent Toys for Tots drive in Greene County was the most successful in the program’s history, the fundraiser’s organizer reported Thursday.
The Tri-County Leathernecks, which has organized the drive for the past 30 years, gave out more than 900 toys for parents to give to their children, group commandant John “Buzz” Walters said.
The number of toys distributed Dec. 19 at four centers was nearly 50 percent more than what the group has typically given away during previous drives, Walters said. The group averaged 650 toys in other years, making this the “best ever” drive, Walters said.
“It was highly successful,” Walters said.
Walters thank the numerous volunteers who organized the toys before the sale and distributed to them at the American Legion in Carmichaels, Bobtown fire hall, St. Thomas Catholic Church in Clarksville and Greene County Fairgrounds in Franklin Township. He also thanked the Moose Club in Waynesburg for donating toys and the Moose Auxiliary for its dinner-dance that raises money each year for the program.
“It takes a lot of volunteers to organize the program,” Walters said. “The site volunteers really are responsible for the success.”
