One dead in Smith Township accident
A 61-year-old man died when his pickup truck crossed the center lane and collided head-on with a car in the 1300 block of Smith Township State Road about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to Washington County coroner Timothy Warco.
Smith Township police chief Bernie LaRue said a medical helicopter was initially called for the unidentified male driver, but was later canceled. Warco pronounced him dead at 8:21 p.m.
The driver of the car was identified on social media as Shannon Briggs of Burgettstown, who is 4½ months pregnant.
Briggs was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries, LaRue said.
Traffic in both directions on Route 18 in Smith Township was being redirected on Covered Bridge Road.
The wreck occurred about two miles south of Bert’s Hot Dog Shop at a bend in the road.
LaRue said the cause is under investigation.
Slovan and Mt. Pleasant volunteer fire departments assisted at the scene.
It was the second fatal accident on Route 18 in the last three weeks and the fourth fatality on area roads so far in 2016.
