Police arrest man after foot chase
WAYNESBURG – A man wanted on assault charges fled on foot when Waynesburg police attempted to arrest him Thursday morning, resulting in a multi-police department search through the borough’s South Side and his eventual arrest off South Morgan Street.
Alexander S. Huffman, 22, of Uniontown, was later arraigned before District Judge Glenn Bates on charges of simple assault and harassment. He was placed in Greene County jail on $10,000 bond.
Huffman ran from Waynesburg police when they attempted to arrest him on High Street shortly before noon., Waynesburg police Officer Lisa Sowden said.
About 15 officers from the Waynesburg department, state police and sheriff’s department participated in the search, which ended when Huffman was cornered in a yard south of the Margaret Bell Miller Middle School basketball court.
Huffman is charged with assaulting his girlfriend, Alicia Dawn Yeager, about 3 a.m. that day at her apartment at Mountainview Gardens. State police said Huffman slapped Yeager in the face and took her telephone and keys so she couldn’t call for help or leave. Yeager left the apartment after Huffman fell asleep and went to her father’s house.
After reporting the incident to state police, Yeager stopped at the Waynesburg Police Department and was seeking assistance to obtain a protection-from-abuse order against Huffman, Sowden said.
While there, Yeager received a call from her father, who was in her car parked on High Street near the police station, that Huffman was there and was attempting to enter the car, Sowden said. When police went to arrest him, he fled south, she said. Police saturated the area and at one point were assisted by employees at Higgins Hauling on First Street, who spotted Huffman hiding under a truck, Sowden said. The employees were aware police were looking for someone and they helped point in the direction he ran, she said.
Huffman is also wanted on a warrant issued in Fayette County for failing to appear for a hearing on a simple assault charge stemming from an incident in December in which Yeager also was the alleged victim.
Huffman also is likely to face additional charges related to his fleeing from police, Sowden said.
