Environmental group files notice to sue coke producer
CLAIRTON (AP) – A Pennsylvania environmental agency says it plans to sue North America’s largest coke producer over clean air violations.
PennFuture announced Thursday that it is taking legal action against U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works.
The group says the Clairton plant, located about 10 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, has violated pollution limits 6,700 times between January 2012 and May 2015.
The group has notified local health officials as well as state and federal environmental agencies of its plans to file a citizen suit under the Federal Clean Air Act, the state’s Pollution Control Act and regulations set by the Allegheny County health department.
A media relations manager for U.S. Steel declined to comment on the group’s intentions to sue.
