City Mission seeks approval to use duplex for administration offices

Washington City Mission plans to purchase the duplex at 58-62 W. Wheeling St. to house the mission’s administration offices.
Washington City Mission presented a revised site plan for an administration building during a Washington city council agenda meeting Tuesday.
The mission plans to purchase a duplex at 58-62 W. Wheeling St. and house the administration offices there. Currently, the mission uses half of the duplex for its medical clinic and classrooms.
Those services were moved to the duplex following last year’s fire that damaged the main building at 84 W. Wheeling St. The other half of the building is occupied by a bail bondsman.
The mission is in negotiations with the owner of the duplex to purchase the building, which it currently rents, said mission President and Chief Executive Officer Dean Gartland.
The mission is seeking the city’s approval to use the building for its administration offices.
The revised plan would save money and provide green space between the newly renovated mens’ shelter and dining room and the proposed veterans’ shelter.
“Being able to have that green space there as a common area and using the duplex as an administrative building gets us all in one place and creates a more supportive environment for our residents,” said Gartland.
“Being able to expand our property a little bit and not have to build another building saves us a considerable amount of money that can be used for programming and services for our residents.”
Council is expected to vote on the application for the new site plan at its meeting today.
