Rostraver commissioners try to recoup lawsuit losses

Rostraver Township commissioners are looking for ways to recover financial losses the township incurred in defending lawsuits.

The board Wednesday authorized Solicitor Albert Gaudio to research ways to recoup financial losses suffered by the township in defending lawsuits caused by inappropriate conduct of persons who the township defended in lawsuits based upon inappropriate behavior, according to the agenda.

Gaudio would not comment on specific lawsuits involved or the amount the township is trying to recoup. He added this is in response to financial losses the township incurred that its insurance doesn’t cover.

“Insurance doesn’t cover everything. There are high deductibles and you can never have enough insurance.” Gaudio said.

In other news, road construction is in full swing. Construction began on Route 51 at Vernon Road to the Allegheny County line Wednesday and will continue through September. One lane is each direction is closed.

Supervisors awarded a contract for road seal coating to Suit-Kote Corp. for $67,731 to be paid from the liquid fuels fund. Roads slated to be seal coated include Beazell Road, Ryans Lane, Gallitin Road, Weddell Drive, Markle Drive, Pollack Run Road and Rockwood Road.

Supervisors awarded a superpave asphalt contract to Morgan Excavating for $245,745, to paid from the liquid fuels and general funds. Roads slated to be paved include Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Weir Drive, Rolling Drive, Chickee Drive, Pat’s Drive, James Drive, Marco Drive, Morning Star Road, Mohawk Drive, Mohawk Cul-de-Sac and Harvest Moon Drive.

Because of the overwhelming requests from residents, commissioners set up electronic waste pickups this summer The dates will correspond with residents’ weekly trash pickup. Residents can put out one item per household.

Dates will be Aug. 1, 9, 17 and 25, and Sept. 2. Items should be placed curbside for pickup by 6 a.m. on the scheduled date.

Items that will be picked up include televisions, microwave ovens, printers, electric typewriters, copiers, fax/copy machines, computer towers, laptops and monitors. Household hazardous waste will not be accepted.
