WAYNESBURG – The Cherry Door, a local thrift shop that raises money for WHS-Greene hospital, moved to the heart of Waynesburg’s business district Monday with the help of the local football team.

The thrift shop, which was at 244 Elm Drive in Franklin Township, is expected to open in early August at its new location, 120 W. High St., said Becky Biddle, the director of volunteer services for the hospital.

“It’s a central location with parking right across the street,” she said. “Plus the college kids can come right down to find things they might need.”

The Cherry Door is run by the group of 60 volunteers who make up the WHS-Greene Auxiliary, Biddle said, with all the money that comes in from the retail operation going directly to the hospital as a donation. Last year, the group raised about $30,000 for the hospital, which was spent on equipment, including a new wheelchair for patients, Biddle said.

“They’ve been looking for a physical space for over a year,” she said.

On High Street, they’ve more than doubled the space they had at the Elm Drive location, which they’ve been packing up over the last few weeks, Biddle said.

“We should definitely have stronger sales here,” she said.

She said they signed in May a five-year lease at the new location, which used to be a dentist’s office. The only work the building needed before they moved in was the removal of two dental rinsing stations, she said.

The auxiliary had help moving Monday morning from the Waynesburg Central High School varsity football team. Assistant coach Chris Caldwell said Monday is typically “lifting day” for the team, but they decided instead to help move the nonprofit’s thrift shop into its new location.

“It’s really good for our team to be a part of the community and for the community to be able to see the kids help out with something like this,” he said.

WHS-Greene President Terry Wiltrout also helped out with the move.

“It’s the least I could do,” he said. “They’ve given back so much to the hospital and they’re going to get a lot more foot traffic here.”

Biddle said without all the help from the community they would not have been able to move everything, which included a box truck, two vans and a pick-up truck full of items for the shop.

Biddle said store hours have not yet been determined, but they are hoping to open within the next couple of weeks.
