WAYNESBURG – The Waynesburg Lions Club recognized Kirsten Garber and Jacob Tretinik as boy and girl of the year during graduation ceremonies May 27 at Waynesburg Central High School. Each was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the club.

Garber will attend Mount Vernon Nazarene University to major in elementary education and minor in exercise studies.

Garber, daughter of Lisa and John Garber of Waynesburg, had a 3.9318 grade point average and was a member of student council, National Honor Society and varsity club. She was secretary of Youth Alive.

She played varsity basketball for four years and was captain of the team for three years. She also participated in varsity track and field for three years.

Garber was vice president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a coach in the Little Dribblers youth basketball program.

She received various awards for basketball. She received the Most Heart Award and was rookie of the year in 2012-13. She was the leading scorer and leader in assists in 2014-15.

Garber was named to the Finest Fifteen for Section 4AA Basketball in 2014-15 and was Greene Sports’ Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 18.

Garber has been a small group leader for the Waynesburg First Church of the Nazarene Youth Group since she was in seventh grade and was a day camp counselor for Waynesburg Parks and Recreation.

Tretinik will attend Mercyhurst University and major in biology with a minor in theater. He plans to attend medical school after graduation from college.

Tretinik, a son of Paul and Shauna Tretinik, had a 4.0 grade point average and received highest honors each semester.

He was a member of National Honor Society, jazz choir, principal’s council, student council, academic league, varsity club, Italian club, construction club, TV workshop club, ski club, drama club and young voters club and served as yearbook editor. He participated in Relay for Life.

Tretinik was a four-year letterman in football. He was a two-time All-Conference football player, received the “Team WETSU,” or best team player, award for football and was a nominee for Pittsburgh Positive Athlete of the Year.

He was named freshman most valuable player in track and field.

Tretinik was an academic league section champion, a member of the Penn State Fayette and United Bank’s 4.0 Club and was a Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania video contest winner.

He was a junior prom court attendant in 2015 and played lead roles in spring musicals “Oklahoma,” “Guys and Dolls” and “Bye Bye Birdie.”

Tretinik is a member of the Pitt Gas Missionary Church’s youth group and the Hunting Hills Hawkeyes, Sporting Clay Club. He was a member of the WCHS Quarterback Club, has volunteered for the Salvation Army and at local nursing homes.
