Monongahela police are looking for two men who wore masks to rob a Finleyville convenience store Tuesday morning.

Monongahela police Chief Brian Tempest said the clerk at Sunoco, 3850 Washington St., told officers he was sitting behind the counter when two men, one armed with a pistol, entered the store about 5:30 a.m.

“One had a gun. and both wore gloves,” Tempest said. “They were completely covered.

“The one with the pistol told the clerk to give him the money. The gunman reached over and took a handful of money. The other one stood at the door, keeping it partially open.”

Both men were dressed in black. The gunman was taller than the other suspect.

“The clerk believes the two may have been black,” Tempest said. “When the two turned and left the store, he could see the color of their skin on the back of their necks.”

The two fled on foot, running behind the store, Tempest said. They got into a gold or brown, four-door sedan. Tempest said it appeared another person was in the vehicle. The car traveled on Washington Street and then north on Route 88. He said the clerk gave officers a partial license plate number, but it apparently was incorrect, because after running various combinations, police could find no record of it.

About $200 was stolen, Tempest said. A $1 bill was found on the floor by the counter.

Tempest said police are checking video surveillance both at the store and from surrounding businesses. Anyone with information or who might have seen anything is asked to call police at 724-258-5511 or 911.
