Ryerson Station park swimming pool opens
The swimming pool at Ryerson Station State Park, which wasn’t able to open Memorial Day because of a lack of lifeguards, will be open today and Friday before resuming a regular daily schedule Saturday.
The pool opened for the season on Monday, according to a release issued by park manager Alan Johnson. It will be closed Wednesday and Thursday this week.
The pool was unable to open for the Memorial Day holiday as the park completed final pool repairs and attempted to hire enough lifeguards.
The park received applications from people who wanted to work as lifeguards but who had to complete their lifeguard training classes, Johnson said in May. At the time, the applicants were taking the required classes and Johnson predicted a mid-June opening.
The pool was closed last year because of dredging at Duke Lake, but in past years the park had problems finding lifeguards, forcing it to close the pool several days each week or end the swimming season early.
The park continues certified lifeguards. Those interested in summer employment as a lifeguard at the park should contact the park manager regarding the application process.
The pool hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, although circumstances might arise that require unexpected changes to these hours, Johnson said A closing date for the season has yet to be determined, but will likely occur in mid-August based upon lifeguard availability.
