WAYNESBURG – The main business district in Waynesburg will take center stage Friday night.

Locally owned businesses and shops along High Street will be offering special promotions and sales from 5 to 8:30 p.m. during the fourth annual Midsummer’s Night Dream open house.

There will be music on the steps of Greene County Courthouse and the courthouse’s shady lawn will be transformed into a dreamy place for guests to be photographed as an elf, fairy or any other character one might expect to find in a Shakespeare play. Wings and pixie dust are certainly an option.

“This is a great annual event that focuses on showcasing what downtown Waynesburg has to offer and we’re happy to have EQT as a sponsor this year because it’s helping us expand,” said Caitlin Carlisle, the head of the event’s committee.

This year’s new challenge is a trivia scavenger hunt that has the answers in many of the participating High Street stores. Those who complete the hunt will be entered into a drawing for a $250 cash prize.

Storytellers and street performers, such as fire dancer Viola Lee, are part of the entertainment and the Hungarian Smoke House and Chatty Cupcakes will be serving up unique treats, along with other food vendors.

Anyone who wants to decorate a mask and wear it Friday can visit Ruff Creek Crafts, which has them for the occasion. Meanwhile, Purse-N-Ality has fairy wings, wands and beribboned head crowns for little princesses and their mothers.

Purse-N-Ality also has an exhibit of the original art of Thomas Shaneyfelt of Clarksville. Shaneyfelt’s coal mining inspired pieces have been on display at the King Coal Festival in Carmichaels. Prints of his more popular subjects will be available for purchase.

Artbeat artists Bonnie Hagyari and Heidi Marx have summoned up a legion of pixies, fairies, gnomes and dragons and there will be new dream-themed works on display from watercolor artist Kit Paulsen of Washington and others.

Rock the Chalk is back for a third year, with 10 artists drawing on the sidewalk or chalking it up on paper taped to store windows and walls. Finished pieces will be judged for prizes, including People’s Choice and chalk art that is done on paper will be available for sale. Boxes of chalk will be set out on the sidewalk in front of the courthouse so that kids of all ages can get into the fun of artful graffiti.
